Paper Mulberry

Paper mulberry is a fiber well known for its use in papermaking. However, long before it was used for these purposes, paper mulberry fibers were made into thread for weaving cloth. Paper mulberry cloth was popularly used along with elm and linden, to name a few.
Paper mulberry cloth was not used exclusively for clothing, but also for wrapping cloths and horn bags, which were used to carry rice and grains. This material, like wisteria, was very much a part of people's everyday lives in old Japan.
The tradition of making paper mulberry cloth is continued by the Preservation Association in Kitoson, Tokushima Prefecture.
